The Phoenix Choir
A weekly singing group for ages 18 to 25, building toward two public performances: Night of Dread in October and Ghost Walk/Earth Dance in February. This choir is made possible with funding from Kiwanis Toronto.
No prior choir experience needed.
Rehearsals from September 30th to October 13th will take place at The Puppetry Exchange in Kensington Market (219 Augusta Ave.).
The Phoenix Choir is a weekly opportunity to sing together and explore music rooted in folk polyphony, soundscape creation, and songs drawn from your own cultural background, with an emphasis on folk music reconnecting us to land, ritual, and community.
We meet for 17 weekly sessions, September 2026 through February 2027. In October, you'll sing at Night of Dread with the group Ori Shalva, in front of thousands of people from the neighbourhood. Then you’ll work with us to create the music and soundscape for a February performance of our production, Ghost Walk/Earth Dance. This indoor immersive experience and performance will be filled with storytelling, music, and soundscape creation, where giant puppets of extinct and threatened animals, share a tale of eco-grief and warning.
Your leaders are Andrea Kuzmich, one of Canada's foremost practitioners of Georgian and Ukrainian polyphonic singing, and Luca Makharashvili, a 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist with Ori Shalva, Canada's foremost Georgian family singing ensemble. Their ensembles have collaborated with C&P for over 20 years.
The Phoenix Choir - October Schedule
Performers will also participate in a Mandatory Rehearsal for Night of Dread on Tuesday, October 20th with a Rain Date taking place on Wednesday, October 21st.
The Phoenix Choir will be needed onsite for Night of Dread on Saturday, October 24th at Dufferin Grove Park for 4:00pm.
Cyanotype Printmaking Workshop
This workshop is suitable for families, adults and teens. It is recommended that kids be 10 and older. NOTE: Children must have an adult with them to work together to create their cyanotype print.
All workshops take place at the Dufferin Grove Park Clubhouse.
In this hands-on workshop with Clay and Paper Theatre artist-facilitators, you'll explore the cyanotype process and create a variety of fabric banners. Cyanotype is one of photography's oldest processes: a sun-sensitive blue print made without a camera, using only light, water, and whatever you gather from the world around you.
You'll arrange grasses, leaves, flowers, and dried plants onto treated fabric. We'll also have pre-cut images and letters available so you can form words and messages. Feel free to bring your own organic finds from your garden or neighbourhood, or join us for a walk through Dufferin Grove Park to gather leaves, branches, twigs, and other materials together.
Your print will become part of The Garden of Tomorrow Today, an installation of hanging banners for Night of Dread. In a time marked by isolation and division, we want to make something that grows our hopes and inspires community action and solidarity.
No experience necessary. All materials provided. Please note that this is a non-toxic process.
