Everything You Need to Know About the Winter Solstice Walk

  • A community procession marking the longest night of the year with lanterns, puppets, music, and collective celebration. It’s family-friendly, accessible, and open to everyone.

  • Not at all — you’re welcome to walk without one. But making and carrying a lantern is a beautiful way to be part of the event. See our Lantern-Making Workshops page for details.

    You are also welcome to bring your own lantern or candle. Perhaps you have some battery powered LED lights you can wear or wrap around a fun hat. Remember: the dress code for the Solstice Walk is sparkly, shiny and bright!

  • Yes! The Walk is completely free. This event has been made possible with funding support from the City of Toronto Parks and Recreation Department.

    Cay and Paper Theatre is also a not-for-profit arts organization with charitable status. Your donations play a vital role in making our programming possible. Please consider donating today through our secure CanadaHelps link HERE and in the top right hand corner of each web page.

  • Registration is not required for the Walk itself. Some workshops do require sign-up due to limited space.

  • The Winter Solstice dress code is sparkly, shiny and bright!

    Practically, make sure you wear warm layers, winter boots, mittens, and a hat. The event takes place outdoors and the pace is gentle but steady.

    This is a ‘rain or shine’ event.

  • We aim to make the Walk as accessible as possible. The route is flat and stroller- and wheelchair-friendly.

  • The whole event is approximately 60 minutes. The Walk itself is approximately 20 -25 minutes. The event includes small pauses for music, performance, group singing and, of course, puppet moments.

  • Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome as long as they are comfortable in crowds and around lanterns/lights.

  • Yes! We encourage sharing your images, as long as you’re respectful and mindful of those who prefer not to be photographed.
