Maracatu Mar Aberto

Maracatu Mar Aberto is a Toronto-based Afro-Brazilian percussion and song troupe rooted in the powerful tradition of *maracatu de baque virado*. Translating to “the open sea,” the group’s name reflects the movement of rhythms, stories, and influences carried from Africa to Brazil and onward to Toronto and beyond. Long-time collaborators with Clay & Paper Theatre, Mar Aberto has been an integral part of the Night of Dread Festival for many years, bringing deep pulse, collective energy, and ceremonial presence to its performances.

Whether on stage or moving through public space, Mar Aberto weaves rhythm, song, and movement into a dynamic, communal experience. Their work traces a living lineage connected to maracatu nations including Estrela Brilhante, Trovão das Minas, and Nunca Antes. Rather than presenting maracatu as folklore, the ensemble practices it as a living, evolving tradition—collectively honouring its cultural roots while grounding it firmly in local community and shared celebration.
